India’s premier technology startup conference, TechSparks Grand Finale, is just 3 days away and you might have already seen the illustrious list of speakers. I am sure all the speakers are thought leaders in their own fields and its going to be a memorable day listening to all of them (similar to last two editions). But then there will be one speaker/ speakers who is our personal favourite. I tell you my favourite speaker and I don’t want to miss that session.
Dr. Anu Vaidyanathan, Ultraman Athlete, IP Professor.
I recently signed up for The Wipro Chennai Marathon and currently undergoing the training. Now I know how difficult is the long distance running and amount of discipline one must have. Dr. Anu Vaidyanathan is an Ultraman Athlete. Now if you haven’t heard about Ultraman, it’s a three day stage-race comprising a 10K swim, 420K bike ride and an 84.4K run. Dr. Anu Vaidyanathan is the only Asian to have competed in and finished 6th at Ultraman. Here are some more milestones of Anu,
In 2009, she became the only Asian (male or female) to compete in Ultraman distance events (10K swim, 420K bike, 84.4K run) and Anu was the first Indian (male or female) to qualify for the Half-Ironman (1.9K swim, 90K bike, 21.1K run) World Championships in 2008.
Besides being an athlete, she runs a company, PatNMarks, that specializes in Intellectual Property Consulting. Anu also has a PhD in a record-setting time of 26 months from University of Canterbury at Christchurch, in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Computer Engineering. A phone number. A website. 240 CITIES. 3.5 million listings. 25 million users. That, in a nutshell, is Just Dial. The free search service has become the advertising medium of choice for small and medium local businesses. And it has become the search engine of choice for millions looking for anything from automobile spare parts to zinc plating services. V.S.S. Mani, Founder of JustDial shared his wonderful journey as an entrepreneur at TechSparks 2011
It all started with “AskMe” in 1989. Ran out of money in the first two years – too many meetings in 5-star hotels, and too many high-quality, high-salary employees. And since he was the sole breadwinner of his family, he had to go do something else to earn money. So, JustDial really started in 1996.
Learned from the mistakes of AskMe and tried not to make the same ones at JustDial so JustDial was started in a humble way with the first office, a tiny – 300 sq. ft., and did not move to a bigger place unless it was absolutely necessary. Rented everything possible, including chairs, tables, computers, and even LAN network cables. Focused on many small customers (instead of a few large customers). And took money in advance. Helped with cash-flow (because there was little VC money inIndiaat that time, and none for a new business model.)
Then came the great dotcom bust in 2000, most internet based companies collapsed, but JustDial was only minimally affected, because they were conservative about betting on the internet. Around 2002 decided to bet big on voice enable local search and marketing around . Met a VC, who told them that he wasn’t interested in their existing business, but would fund them if they converted to a BPO. This convinced them to not pursue VCs any more. This remained true until 2006, at which point a VC approached them, heard their story and signed a term sheet the next day.
After lots of internal conflicts, Just Dial finally launched the web-based version in 2007. There was this fear that the internet business would cannibalize the voice based business. Interestingly, their internet business grew like a hockey stick, and at the same time the voice-based business continued to grow at the same rate as before. Rode the telecom penetration and internet penetration wave on the way to fantastic growth.
The Real India is in her villages
It appears that further growth in metros is not possible because the market is already saturated. But,Indiais not just a metro-based market. JustDial will go to all the small cities.
The JustDial WAP site is growing at a tremendous pace. Apps (Android/iPhone/Blackberry) are being launched in near future.
Throughout the journey, there have been naysayers. The second time he re-started JustDial, everyone told him that it was a bad idea to re-start a failed business. When JustDial launched the web-based version, people told them that they were not a tech company, and would fail in this segment. Now the same story is repeating with their app-based business that they’re launching in theUSmarket. (What they’re seeing that “human assisted search” is finding a lot of takers in that market – where talking to actual humans is rare.)
JustDial.com has the largest number of reviews and ratings in the world – 2.5 million. The secret sauce? Most people don’t actually go online and give reviews. Most online review sites have paid staff generating “reviews”. JustDial calls their voice customers back for ratings/reviews and then uploads them to their site.
The Grand Finale of TechSparks 2011 will happen at IIM Bangalore on 19th Aug 2011
